On the right is the earliest photograph of the Burns Tavern. This view is from Dalziel Street, where the Burns Tavern is on the corner. The person on the far right is Mr John Ferguson (white sleeves) the owner.

Apparently the Burns Tavern originated in Baille’s Court and it then moved to here.

At the time of this photo there was no other houses in Dalziel Street.

Dalziel Street may be the oldest street in this town. The roadway on which it is constructed is the oldest in the district, known as Watling Street, or Roman Road.

When the old school in Dalziel Street was vacated Mr William Chambers founder of Messrs. William Chambers and Sons, sawmillers and building contractors moved in. His first contract was Burns Tavern. William Chambers was one of the pioneers of Motherwell.

On the right are photographs of the Burns Tavern is the late 1950’s. The picture shows a tenement building, which was later bought by the brewery to be demolished to make way for the new bar. Where it presently stands today.

The original bar (as shown) is now the lounge.

We are trying to trace how far back the Burns Tavern actually goes. Also any history attached to it. If anyone has any information or historical data on the pub, please E-Mail Anne.

Anne, the present owner, was recently contact by Spirit Finders of Scotland, who wanted to carry out a paranormal investigation. This in turn prompted us to carry out our own historical research.
